Hannah’s expanded wishlist:

  • Funny: Comedy is 80% timing and it takes a truly gifted writer to make it work on the page. I’d love to see literary novels that use humor in dark and/or interesting ways, playful horror (think Grady Hendrix), smart and funny upmarket fiction, and narrative non-fiction and essay collections that can make me laugh.

  • International: I have a penchant for books set/authors from outside the US. My leisure reading, on any given year, is half translated works.

  • Illuminating: I read to learn! I want to come away from a reading experience, whether its fiction or non-fiction, having learnt something new. Perhaps your protagonist works in a field I would otherwise never know about, or you’re a journalist diving deep into a specialist subject – I want to hear from you.

Things that always catch my eye:

  • Women in male-dominated industries/spaces

  • An environmental angle (though, no speculative or cli-fi please!)

  • An unusual setting: I’ve sold books set in a Floridian monkey sanctuary, a Vermont luxury spa, Salt Lake City (SLC is a pretty strange place)…

  • Messy female narratives (I HATE SUZIE remains one of my all-time favorite TV shows, if someone can distill that chaos into a book, I’m all in)

  • An art angle (If I wasn’t in publishing, I’d have tried to break into the art and antiquities world)

  • Food/cooking (not cookbooks)
